Should Wal-Mart Change China?---Whittier College Visit to BiMBA

“Wal-Mart and China—the world’s largest corporation and the world’s most populous country—have somehow managed to meet and maintain a state of relatively steady symbiosis, each fulfilling vital needs for the other. The interaction between Wal-Mart and China over the next decade has become critical to the fate of the planet’s environment”—the Atlantic.

January 9, 2012, Langrun Garden welcomed a special group of friends from far away. The student delegation from Whittier College visited BiMBA at Peking University and engaged in an interactive and informative discussion with BiMBA students on the topic of Wal-Mart in China. Prof. John Yang, Dean of BiMBA, Mr. Henry To, President of Peter F. Drucker Academy, Prof. Jeff Decker from Whittier College and Mr. Edwin Keh, a trustee of Whittier College and former COO and senior VP of Wal-Mart were present at the event. Before the event, the group paid a visit to a Wal-Mart store in Beijing. The visiting group is in the class “Doing Business in China” and they planned to observe the operation of Fortune 500 companies in China through field trips and learning from campus talks.

Prof. Yang firstly extended his warm welcome to the Whittier group and gave a brief introduction on the history and international cooperation of Peking University and BiMBA. Prof. Yang emphasized on the “3C” mission of BiMBA—competence, character and commitment. BiMBA aims to develop MBA students into future global leaders with business acumen, high moral standards and firm commitment to the society. The visiting students found resonance with the pluralistic spirit of Peking University and its strong sense of social responsibility.

Next, Prof. Decker quoted Whittier alumni Richard Nixon’s visit to China 40 years ago, which was a historical milestone in opening the diplomatic relation between the two nations. Over the past decades, the two nations have become closer, however, “we do not understand each other than we expected”, Prof. Decker said.

Mr. Keh, former Wal-Mart senior VP, then shared with the students his efforts and thoughts in evolving Wal-Mart into an environment friendly company. One question lingered on as Wal-Mart has become a retail tycoon: what to do with Wal-Mart’s global influence and enormous buying power? Wal-Mart began to engage in a bold experiment in consumer behavior modification, market economics, and environmental stewardship. Mr. Keh believed defect products returned by the customers were the most wasteful for it produced zero benefit in the entire supply chain. Therefore, they tried to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste, to sell products that sustain our resources and environment.

The discussion was centered on “should Wal-Mart try to change China?” and diverse responses emerged from the groups. BiMBA student Kang Zhou said that Wal-Mart might not possess the power to influence China given this stage of development, for any multinational corporation was operated under local regulations and yet needed time to develop its competitiveness in China. Whittier students believed Wal-Mart should extend its influence over the suppliers in China and help raise their awareness in the area of social responsibility. Based on the discussion, Prof. Decker concluded that Wal-Mart should seek cooperation with Chinese local companies to facilitate China’s change instead of trying to gain direct influence.

At last, Mr. Keh and Prof. Decker pointed out that the take-away for the students was to grow a sense of social responsibility. “Future global business leaders should gather around like-minded partners and be ambitious about the right thing for the society”.

Entrepreneur Dream of an American Lawyer

By Qinghua LI

On December 14th, 2011, BiMBA’s old friend Mr. Terry Crawford revisited BiMBA Langrun Garden, sharing his entrepreneur dream with MBA students. Ms. Crystal Fang, Senior Manager from BiMBA Career Development Department, held the event.

As Ms. Fang introduced, Terry was previously a lawyer with the Wall Street law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he worked on landmark IPOs by ICBC. However, an undying passion for entrepreneurship drove him to leave the well-paid law career and embark on a new journey as a foreign entrepreneur in China. Along the way, Gloria, his wife, has always been his strong backing support. While working on M&A transactions in Beijing, Terry already launched several websites and businesses. Among them, hitchsters.com was named as Time Magazine’s one of the top 50 websites in 2007, together with LinkedIn.

Terry introduced his most recent business venture InitialView (www.initialview.com) to the MBA students, sharing with them his experience on how to search for business opportunity, develop business model and expand the business in the market. Based on his observation and research on China market, Terry found a business opportunity in the joint between the job market and employment market. InitialView is a third party platform to offer low-cost yet professional mock interview video service, which would serve as concrete and pervasive evidence in support of job application. At the same time, the service also effectively helps talent selection process based on the applicant’s English capability and overall performance in the video. Currently, Terry turns to develop business in the international student market. InitialView became an integral part of the applications for renowned universities in the US such as University of Virginia and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Based on his own experience, Terry offered suggestions to foreign entrepreneur fellows: One should first identify his/her unique advantage (including language capability), and then build a simple but effective business model and partner up with reliable like-minded people. During the Q&A section, BiMBA students actively raised questions on InitialView, such as how to build up the credibility of InitialView, how to protect its business model from duplication, and how to gain acceptance from HR sector, etc. Terry responded that the quality of the service, and public acceptance are both primary factors. Given the nature of the business itself, the key thus lies in obtaining the trust of customers and market share.

BiMBA 2012 New Year Party Award

by Tony Liu

On December 17, 2011 BiMBA had its New Year Party in Beijing. This traditional event is an annual gethering of all BiMBA family members. All the classes put up performances to compete with each other and to celebrate the new year together. More than 500 students and professors came to the Party.

This year, the alumini class of E09 took the audience by surprise. They came with a professionally produced short film, highlighting the Peking University spirit. More than a dozen historical figures played by the students appear in the film, which commemorates the famous May Fourth Movement of 1919, starting at Peking University and calling for Mr. D (democracy) and Mr. S (science).

As always, students from the full-time, part-time and executive programs all came to the party with elaborately prepared performances. The audience were both energized by the vigor of the students and deeply moved by their emotion toward BiMBA. The BiMBA spirit also passes on from the graduating classes to the new students. The party was filled with high spirit and colorful shows, and at the end of the party, every one felt proud to be a member of the BiMBA family.

                                                                                                     Qinghua Li
What is the secret of a traditional manufacturing company to thrive in times of global competition? How can a company, whose business extends to over 130 countries globally, well balance between adjusting to the local customs and preserving its distinguished corporate culture?

On October 21, 2011, the MBA students from BiMBA were invited to visit the Sandvik China head office. Mr. Svante Lindholm, the CEO of Sandvik China, Mr. Holger Wiklund, the Vice President, together with Mr. Feng Yi, the HR Director of Greater China were present to welcome the faculty members and MBA students with warmth.

Mr. Lindholm started off by delineating the development history and status quo of Sandvik. Born in 1862, the global head office of Sandvik is located in Sweden. Sandvik operations comprise the Tooling, Mining and Construction, and the Materials Technology business areas. In 2010, the group had 47,000 employees globally and its sales reached approximately 101.6 billion RMB in China. With more than 3000 employees in China, Sandvik’s business is developing rapidly in Chinese market.

As Mr. Lindholm pointed out, adherence to the core values of Sandvik is the key for its success. Firstly, Sandvik pays attention to the cultivation of teamwork. Not only should the employees be able to establish cooperative relationship among peers, but they should also be able to develop sustainable partnership with customers. Secondly, the spirit of fair competition is promoted in Sandvick culture. Mr. Lindholm believed that fair competition and advancement based on merit would generate corporate loyalty. Lastly, Sandvick encourages new ideas and innovation. The corporate strategy on R&D and IT development give Sandvik distinct competitive advantages in the industry.

Sandvik endeavors to live up to their long-term strategy for profitable growth through talent pool construction. Mr. Wiklund introduced the Sandvik mentor program to BiMBA students. The group would assign senior managers to coach new recruits, help them understand Sandvik culture and cultivate their business acumen.

When being inquired about the key of Sandvik’s fast growth in China, Mr. Lindholm expressed that Sandvik aims to actively contribute to improving the customers’ productivity and profitability. Therefore, their service is highly recognized in terms of performance, quality, speed, safety and flexibility.

The “cultural fusion” at Sandvik generates curiosity and discussion among MBA students. Sandvik strives to better combine the varying Swedish, Chinese and corporate cultures. The emphasis on diversity at Sandvik is also revealed in recruitment standards and processes. Regardless of ethnicity, gender and culture, Sandvik employees are selected based on examination of skills and work ethics.

Following the seminar, the BiMBA students took the opportunity to tour at Sandvik China head office in Jiuxianqiao. The European style office setting at Sandvik has been awarded as one of the “Top 50 Green Companies” by Business Weekly, and “Top 50 Best Working Environment” by Staffers and China Business in 2010.
