World Economic Forum Chair Klaus Schwab Visits Langrun Garden

On 13 May 2017, Peking University’s National School of Development (“NSD”) Langrun Gardens welcomed a special guest: Klaus Schwab, a true economic celebrity, who established and initiated the world-famous Davos Forum.

Mr. Schwab was born on 30 March, 1938 in Germany’s Ravensburg and later become a naturalized Swiss citizen. In 1971 he created the World Economic Forum (also known as the Davos Forum) and became its Chairman. Throughout the years the Davos Forum has been one of the grandest in the world.

Famous NSD professors such as Justin Lin, Zhou Qiren, Zhang Weiying, Yao Yang, Huang Yiping and Fu Jun also attend either the Davos Forum in Switzerland during the Winter, or the Global Economic Forum New Leaders Annual Meeting (Summer Davos Forum).

During this visit, Mr. Schwab accepted the Chinese Government’s invitation to attend the One Belt One Road Summit. In addition, Mr. Schwab used this occasion to advance the agenda of the coming Summer Davos Forum. Given many years’ cooperation between NSD professors and Davos, Mr. Schwab made a special trip to the NSD.

NSD Dean Professor Yao Yang, Vice Dean Professor Huang Yiping, Vice Dean Professor Xu Jintao, Vice Dean Yu Miaojie, NSD Professor & Peking University Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development Academic Dean Fu Jun welcomed Mr. Schwab at the Zhifuxuan meeting room. Both sides discussed Global Economic trends, the significance of China’s One Belt One Road, China’s Development and Reforms and the NSD and Davos Forum, specifically cooperation with the Summer Davos.

Afterwards, NSD co-founder, honorary Dean, Peking University New Structural Economics Research Centre Director, Peking University Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development Dean Professor Justin Lin came from his the 30th anniversary of his own forum to meet with Mr. Schwab. 

During his visit to the NSD, Mr. Schwab was accompanied by over 20 “Davos Young Global Leaders”. Meanwhile, the NSD also invited numerous masters and PhD researchers, NSD MBA candidates, students and alumni. Many of these outstanding young people came from outside of Beijing and from 1.30pm in Zhifuxuan meeting room, they discussed hot topics such ascompany management, the global state of affairs and African aid.

Peking University alumni and Ofo co-founder & CEO Dai Wei not only participated in the discussions, but also brough two ‘little yellow bikes’ from his company for attendees to try, brightening the whole event in the beautiful Langrun Gardens.
